  Tom Shelley's LSRMail Email List

Founded in 1994, Tom Shelley's email list has more than 320 members, as of June, 2004. It is an international cyber-community that operates as an online meeting 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The LSRmail list started over nine years ago when about ten LSRians got together and began corresponding, exchanging information and support for each other in staying sober.

Discussion on this list is unmoderated. It is intended to be a free-thought forum for sobriety support.

You must use your real name to sign up for this list. If you have a concern about confidentiality, here is a little history:

When the email list began in 1994 we had no listserver and each individual member had to keep his/her own address list. It just seemed natural that we should be writing to other people that we "knew". After all, we are often sharing things of a personal and private nature many, if not most, of us have come to feel more comfortable sharing with real people rather than cyberspace "handles" like "Goofy123" or "prznigl@homeboy.com". Once we switched to a listserver, at about the end of our first year, the tradition held and has proved very useful in developing a community of support for those online with us.

In the time the list has been operational we have had no breaches of privacy or confidentiality. Since membership on the list is restricted to those who ask to join there is little possibility for this to happen.

The list has proved of immense benefit to the members, many of whom are located in areas where no physical LifeRing meetings exist. In fact, some of our members are located in areas where no support groups of any kind exist.

I hope this explanation has been sufficient and that you will consider joining us. I look forward to hearing from you.

(By the way, to answer the question you may be asking yourself...I have no way of knowing if the name you give is your real name or not. It is all a matter of trust...TS)

To join, email a note to Tom Shelley, list owner, tshelley@verizon.net . The listserver is yahoogroups.com, which provides a user center where you can switch modes, hold your mail, or unsubscribe yourself. Tom will send you detailed instructions when you subscribe.

An anthology of 125 of the more memorable posts from the first four years of the list, selected by www.unhooked.com webmaster Marty N., is posted here on the Keepers page, and is available in print as the  224pp. paperback Keepers: Voices of Secular Recovery from LifeRing Press.  This is a motivational collection of anecdotes, stories and short essays from the world of secular recovery.  It makes an excellent introduction for newcomers and a good companion for all seasons.
