Synopsis: This is probably NOT a good choice of a movie to watch back-to-back with, say, LEAVING LAS VEGAS. Jack Nicholson plays a drunken bum haunted by visions of his past life and accompanied by equally boozy fellow travelers, notably including actress Meryl Streep and singer/actor Tom Waits. Images of death and regret are made more vivid by the realistic gray Depression era (1938) surroundings. A beautifully written, brutal, cheerless, and brilliant movie.
