Synopsis:

Sean Penn plays a lowlife alcoholic named Eddie who discovers his pregnant wife Maureen has been brutalized by a neighbor.  His violent reaction lands him in a mental institution for ten years. Released, he starts trying to recover in every sense and regain his family.
