 THE VERDICT (1982)

Synopsis:

Paul Newman plays Frank Galvin, a burned-out lawyer with an alcohol problem and no prospects.  Chance offers Galvin an easy opportunity to salvage his career, but he fights past the temptation of expediency to struggle again huge personal and external odds.  Director Sidney Lumet similarly avoids easy Hollywood clichés to give the movie a subtle interplay of light and shadow.  A rival law firm employs a woman played by Charlotte Rampling to seduce Galvin and inform on and sabotage his case, but she in part helps him redeem himself instead.
