Lawyer's LifeRing is a service for current or past members of the California Bar, law students, and their concerned Significant Others.

A lawyer's life can be exciting, rewarding, and healthful -- or the stress can get to you.  It's no secret that the legal profession has an unusually high incidence of alcohol and drug abuse, depression, and similar issues.  A large percentage of  professional discipline cases involve alcohol and/or other drugs.

Whenever people get more deeply into alcohol and/or drugs than is comfortable for them, they begin to think about quitting.  That's a healthy mental exercise.  But thinking about quitting and actually doing it, and sticking with the decision, are two different things, even for highly intelligent and usually decisive people like us lawyers.

That's where a LifeRing peer support group can be helpful. LifeRing peer support groups are nonjudgmental, confidential, and supportive gatherings of people who have been there.  Peer support works, even (or especially) for rugged individualists.  After some time in LifeRing groups, many people credit the experience with helping them turn their lives around. They celebrate the day they quit drinking/using drugs as their personal Independence Day.

If you are a California lawyer, judge, or law student who is contemplating the start of a new chapter in your life, free of drugs and alcohol, and you want information and support to put your plan into action; or if you have already stopped drinking/drugging and want a non-religious support network, Lawyer's LifeRing is here for you.  Please contact Lawyer's LifeRing via email (lawyers@lifering.org ) or toll-free at 1-800-811-4142

The Significant Others of lawyers or students are also welcome to get in touch and talk over the options.

What should you expect from your first contact with Lawyer's LifeRing?

  • A conversation with a California lawyer who used to drink and/or use drugs and has successfully quit;
  • Respect for your confidentiality and your intelligence;
  • On request, information about and referral to the State Bar's Lawyer Assistance Program, LifeRing support groups, and chemical dependency treatment counselors and/or programs.

Lawyer's LifeRing is a project of LifeRing Secular Recovery.  If you are a California lawyer interested in joining the Lawyer's LifeRing peer support team, please contact us: email lawyers@lifering.org or phone 1-800-811-4142.
