Advocates will try to clarify the rights of recovering
people in the workplace following the recent US Supreme Court
decision in
Raytheon v. Hernandez. Who should attend: People
in recovery who are or hope to be employed; Employee
Assistance Program professionals. One hour of Continuing
Education credit.
Breakout B: The
Pioneer Experience. LifeRing convenors will share
their experiences in starting LifeRing meetings in a variety
of settings. Finding a location, doing publicity,
getting referrals, building a core group. Round table
discussion, audience input invited. Who should attend:
People who are thinking about starting a LifeRing meeting.

Preventing Relapse. Presenter: Marcia Leonard
LCSW, staff counselor at the Kaiser Permanente Chemical
Dependency Recovery Program in Vallejo. Ms. Leonard
leads the Relapse Prevention class at Vallejo and has written
extensively on the topic. "Marcia Leonard is the

Almost Runs Itself!" Experienced LifeRing convenors

positive environment; the opening statement; getting the
process rolling; encouraging and handling crosstalk; dealing
with problem situations. With commentary by a
professional meeting facilitator. Who should attend:
People who are or who are thinking about becoming LifeRing
convenors.

Guest speaker William L.
White, author of
Slaying the
Dragon, Toward
a New Recovery Movement, and other works, will give an
illustrated slide presentation covering the history of the
American recovery movement, concluding with a look ahead at
the emerging recovery movement of tomorrow. Four
hours of Continuing Education credit. William L. White is a Senior
Research Consultant at Chestnut Health Systems / Lighthouse
Institute and Past-Chair of the Board of Recovery Communities
United. He has worked with recovery advocacy groups across the
country and has written extensively about recovery advocacy.
White has a Master’s degree in Addiction Studies and 35 years
of experience in the addictions field. He has authored or
co-authored more than 140 articles and monographs, and eight
books. His book, Slaying the Dragon - The History of Addiction
Treatment and Recovery in America, received the McGovern
Family Foundation Award for the best book on addiction
recovery. White was featured in the Bill Moyers’ PBS special
“Close To Home: Addiction in America” and Showtime’s
documentary “Smoking, Drinking and Drugging in the 20th
Century.” He also received the 2003 National Association of
Addiction Treatment Provider’s Michael Q. Ford Journalism
Award.
