Feedback from Counselors to LifeRing Presentation

In January, three LSR convenors (Gillian E., Alicia B. and Marty N.) gave an inservice presentation to staff at the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic in San Francisco; see story.  The counselors in attendance had to fill out a form to get continuing education credits, and this form included space for detailed feedback on the presentation.  Joey C., the program coordinator, told me that all of the counselors checked the box saying they found the speakers "very informative" or "informative" and that two of them handed in more extensive comments, which the overworked Joey finally faxed to the Service Center in April.

In the space on the form that asks "How was this presentation relevant to you?," one counselor wrote:

  • "I have clients who are either agnostic or atheist who are uncomfortable with the 12-step concept of a higher power."

The other counselor wrote in the same space:

  • "Many clients have difficulty relating to a 12-step tradition or find that 12-step formats are in contradiction to their own cultural and/or spiritual beliefs."

The Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic is host to a Thursday evening LifeRing meeting.
