AWAKENING
Reaching blindly for understanding,
Groping for real reasons,
Searching for the bottom line
Through life's many seasons.
Feeling joy for loved ones,
Then bidding them good-bye.
Holding long the moments
Then watching the decades fly.
Looking in the mirror,
Seeing the careworn face -
The one that could be parent
Of the past or child's future place.
We think of life's past battles -
The fight against addiction,
The struggle for self-esteem,
And the hint of some conviction.
Slowly we begin to see
That life goes on inside us.
Events happen all around,
In us, of us and through us.
Indeed we are in the world
And we are certainly of it.
Everything we do affects the earth
To its detriment or profit
As I look down life's bumpy road
For meaning profound and deeper
I finally understand, in truth,
I am my brother's keeper.
For all the folks that I have touched
Will have a thought of me
So when I'm gone I'd rather leave
A smile and a warm memory.
