OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

Sometime in that darkest hour
Of grief and cold despair,
I found some fleeting power
To reach out and to dare.

My life had been a sinkhole
For drugs and alcohol.
Robbed of mind and poor of soul
I hit that final wall.

With desperate, sad and sinking heart
And tears upon my face,
I set a wobbling course to start
To find a sober place.

The house reached out to take my hand
And lead me home once more.
They flew me from that hopeless land
And revealed an open door.

The door to opportunity was there
For me to open wide.
To walk, if I would only dare,
To life and health inside.

I straightened up as best I could
And held up my aching head.
All I hoped was that they would
Give me some time and maybe a bed.

What I found was a wondrous way
To get my life on track.
To see beyond this dismal day
Of booze and weed and crack.

They gave me back my life.
They gave me back my dream
They freed me from a world of strife
And gave me my self-esteem.

Now my mind is clear and bright
And I've a start on my good health,
Now the opportunity's in sight
To gain some modest wealth.

Now my life is fit to live,
And it's free from drugs and dope.
Now I have the time to give
Some hugs and warmth and hope.

Thank you Cathy and the staff, too,
Thanks for all that you have done.
And when we leave we'll think of you
As we march into the rising sun.

Dedicated to Cathy and the staff of Opportunity House and to all the members of the House.
